4 Rules On How To Be The Best Dressed Wedding Guest

I love weddings! I live for a good party, celebrating people you care about and witnessing love in all of its facets. Plus, who doesn’t love a reason to get all dressed up and pretty? Right!?

Coming from both an African and Caribbean background, weddings were always that time to bring your best, to put on your best, to show up as your best. The guests are a direct reflection of the couple, so as a sign of respect, we show up and show out. Weddings in my cultures are joyous and vibrant and typically, you add to those factors with your attire.

There are a few rules of thumb for occasion dressing that I’ve adapted to help me through the process of finding that perfect outfit that I’m going to share with you today.

  • First things, first...comfort is key. If you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, you’ll feel overly self-aware and self-conscious, which is the last thing you want in a social setting. That’s why I gravitate toward silhouettes that complement my body type. For example, I like my legs, so I would steer towards a mini or midi dress to show them off, or maybe even a long dress with a split. Also, if I’m showing some skin in one part of my outfit, I'll make sure to be covered in the other half. For example: if my clavicle and arms are out, I’ll balance it out with a longer-length dress. Or if I'm wearing a shorter dress, I'll make sure my arms are covered. It’s all about playing with proportions—major key!
  • I try to stay away from blacks and whites, unless otherwise requested by the bride and groom.
  • Minimal accessories, because too many times I’ve gone in all my glory, only to end up losing something, like an earring or a bracelet, so less is definitely more in this regard. Also, big bags are a big no!
  • Lastly, when I know I’m going to be dancing my butt off, a pair of heels that I know I’m not going to want to ditch after a few hours are a priority.

Hopefully, this checklist will help you narrow down your options for an outfit the next time you have a wedding or an event to go to. Allowing you to actually enjoy the shopping process, like you’re supposed to.
